4. The Connect Spent and generate employment project involves pro-poor commodity value chain development in one of Bedelle village, the suburb which is near to Brewery factory. The project has started in June 2014. The dwellers are characterized by little income base, low level of technical skill and live on in informal activities such as petty trade and causal labor work. They have low access to credit and saving. The project area, Bedelle, has huge potential for the growth of agro-business proposed by this project. The business model involves innovative approach in which the outputs of one production system serve as the input for the production of other outputs. The fattening business use the byproduct of brewery as major animal feeds and supplies animal dung to harness biogas energy for brick production, the residues of the biogas is utilized as fertilizer for vegetables production.

Active involvement of relevant stakeholders is in a place to ensure the successful implementation of the project. The overall objective of the project is to contribute for ensuring food security of the target group by promoting commodity value chain development. The business model offers the cooperative an opportunity of maximally utilizing locally available resources which usually left as useless one. The project provides full time employment opportunity for 80 clients who are mostly economically active poor women and young people. It improves income of the cooperative by 50% and also enhance saving. The envisaged interventions are to organize 80 clients in fattening cooperative, provide training and other technical support, providing rolling budget, and support to the cooperatives to access raw materials for production activities and also link the cooperatives with the market to sell their products.
