I Know I Can!

Since 2014, Development Expertise Center (DEC) has been implementing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) projects entitled “I Know I Can! Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health for informed Decision (I-KIC)” with the support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation in Oromia Region. The achieved results during the last two rounds of project implementation will be intensified and lessons learned will be the basis to make the needed modification with the current proposed project. The project is planned to implement in primary (public and private) and secondary schools in south west Oromia. The proposed project intends to empower young people in primary and secondary schools to make evidence based SRHR decisions. The expected outcomes of this project are: Increased SRHR Education and Information, Utilization of Youth-Friendly Health Service (YFHS) and increased community support for and engagement in adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health (AYSRH).
The major activities of this project are: SRHR Manual Contextualization and distribution, Capacity Development of Schools, Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) and Religious Leaders for better Engagement, SRHR Education and Facilitation, promote Innovation, Documentation, Learning and Sharing, Strengthening age appropriate Health Referral Linkages and parent Dialogue Sessions and piloting of Whole School Approach (WSA) Concept
The proposed activities will be undertaken in 23 schools in Oromia Region (19 existing and 4 new ones).
Security challenges, shortage of classrooms and time for teachers to facilitate the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) sessions could be among the expected challenges that enforce to take slightly longer time than the proposed time for SRHR implementations. The impact of this can be lowered by closely working with local government, jointly planning with schools, teachers, health facilities, targeted students and parents.
