Meseret’s journey is a powerful example of the impact of the empowerment project for migrant women in the North Wollo Zone, funded by UN-WOMEN and implemented by the Development Expertise Center. As one of the project beneficiaries, Meseret gained valuable life skills and entrepreneurial training, which helped her to transform her life.
In Woldia City, DEC supported has been making a significant difference in the lives of migrant women and returnees. Among its many success stories is Meseret, a determined woman who turned her dreams into reality through training and entrepreneurial service.
Meseret participated in a comprehensive program that equipped her with essential life skills, entrepreneurial knowledge and basic business management techniques. These trainings were designed not only just to provide knowledge but also to inspire confidence and foster a sense of agency among participants.
With a startup capital of 30,000 birr from her family, Meseret opened a mini-shop in Woldia City Kebele 05. Initially earning 400 birr per day, her business quickly grew as she applied the insights and skills gained from the program. Today, she earns over 3,000 birr per day and takes part in a daily saving (Equb) with her relatives.
Meseret says, “The training inspired me to start my own business and create opportunities”. Her shop not only supports her family but also contributes to the local economy by offering essential goods and services.
Meseret’s success highlights the broader impact of the project empowering women to achieve financial independence and inspire others. With her business thriving, she is considering expanding her offerings and mentoring other women in her community.
