Efforts and Progress toward improving menstrual hygiene challenges

A recent study conducted in 2023 revealed that the prevalence of safe menstrual hygiene management practices in Ethiopia is 52.69%. This statistic highlights that only about half of adolescent girls in the country maintain safe menstrual hygiene practices.

Despite ongoing efforts by international and local organizations to address menstrual hygiene challenges, a significant proportion of girls continue to face barriers. A study involving 650 schoolgirls in Addis Ababa found that 50.3% reported missing classes during their menstrual periods. Of these, 85% were absent for 1-3 days, and 15% missed more than four days each month. The primary reasons for these absences include a lack of awareness about menstrual hygiene management, insufficient privacy in schools, and the high cost of sanitary pads.

In response to these challenges, Development Expertise Center (DEC), through the Right Here Right Now program, is providing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) information and education in 18 schools in Addis Ababa in Addis Ababa three sub cites using a youth-friendly manual called Meahrebe, DEC addresses various SRH topics, including improving school menstrual hygiene services.

DEC has also established “safe corners” in 18 target schools, These spaces offer students access to both disposable and reusable sanitary pads, a place to rest when experiencing pain, shower facilities, and various educational materials. The impact of these safe corners has been significant. Schools have become more attentive to girls’ menstrual hygiene needs, male students have shown positive attitude changes by participating in awareness-raising activities, and the attendance and academic performance of female students have improved.

To combat the taboo surrounding menstruation, DEC conducts various media and school campaigns during International Menstrual Hygiene Management Day. These campaigns involve the entire school community, including students, teachers, parents, and school administrations.

Additionally, DEC is engaging in national advocacy with its partners to influence the government to allocate sufficient budget for school gender clubs to operationalize menstrual health and hygiene education and services. DEC also pushing for the amendment of taxation for menstrual hygiene products.
